The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy has announced that exam registration for Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants has been suspended for PT graduates from Egypt, India, Philippines, and Pakistan. This exam, called the NPTE, is required for first time licensure so the suspension of the test without notice will have severe consequneces to employers and foreign PT workers coming to the U.S. to fill the many vacant physical therapist postions. The workers have in the past been able to obtain a one year H-1B to begin employment, take the NPTE test and receive their license and then apply for a three year H extension. It is anticipated this suspension of testing may be in place as long as the end of 2011.
