The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USCIS) has begun to target larger companies for the hiring of undocumented workers. Just recently, Chipotle Mexican Grill become the latest target of a U.S. government crackdown on companies that hire undocumented workers.
Approximately 60 Chipotle restaurants in Virginia and Washington, D.C. will be audited by federal immigration officials, who will look over employment and employee immigration records for each restaurant.
USCIS says the audits are a broader strategy of “attacking” companies that hire illegal workers and focusing on corporate hiring practices. Some immigration advocates have criticized the increased audits as causing job losses for workers who are already poor.
With increased audits, it will be important for companies to improve their hiring practices and ensuring that each worker is legally authorized to work in the United States.
