ICE To End Policy of Detaining Asylum Seekers!!!

Categories: Immigration Lawyer Blog San Diego

A report from the AP announced today that ICE will end its policy of detaining asylum seekers while their applications are pending, a process which can take years to complete.  This policy change comes after years of lobbying by US in international organizations that have repeatedly criticized the US policy as a violation of the detainees’ human rights.   This announcement follows other important regulatory and policy changes the Executive Branch has already made such as ending the “Widow Penalty” and removing HIV/AIDS from the list of diseases which make immigrants inadmissible to the US.  As Comprehensive Immigration Reform legislation starts what’s sure to be a long and arduous path through Congress it’s a relief to know that President Obama realizes that he need not wait for Congress to take action to start implementing positive policy changes.
