Despite claims that the new E-verify program is simple, the SSA (Social Security Administration) which jointly administers the program fails to use it on nearly 20 percent of their new hires. SSA is required by law to use it on all new hires. Moreover, it improperly ran checks on 169 individuals who had not been hired. Furthermore, SSA violated the program rules with the timing of its verifications 49 percent of the time! Sounds like grounds for a fine for any private sector employer.
While the ideas behind this program are sound in theory, the numerous errors create an unusable program. Foreign born workers are reporting an error rate of nearly 10 percent. Even U.S. Citizens sometimes wrongly show up as being unauthorized to work. This results for time consuming delays and expenses for all involved to resolve these issues.
