On Saturday October 8th, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that allows undocumented immigrants to access financial aid for university education. To be eligible the person must have come to the United States before the age of 16 and attended a California public high school. The undocumented immigrants no have access to public financial aid, including Cal Grants.
Undocumented immigrants who reside in California and attended public high school in California were already eligible for in-state tuition. And in July of this year Governor Brown signed a bill granting them access to private financial aid.
Hopefully, the federal government will follow California’s lead in this widely supported aspect of necessary immigration reform.
